farmers-market-4

This coming Saturday, May 9th, marks the return of the Kalona Farmer’s Market. This year, the farmer’s market will be held on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon on Fifth Street in downtown Kalona.

The Kalona Chamber of Commerce has hosted the market in downtown Kalona for the last six years. Kalona Chamber of Commerce Director Tonia Poole says there will be about 20 vendors at this weekend’s market. She says this is a great opportunity to do some shopping for Mother’s Day, which is this Sunday, “And with it being early in the season, a little early for some of the produce, we will have some baked goods and some of that early produce. Definitely fresh flowers, perfect timing for Mother’s Day, but then there are a handful of craft items that make really great Mother’s Day gifts. And as the season goes on, the produce vendors will pick up.”

Several vendors from last year’s market have been confirmed to be returning this year, with some new vendors attending for the first time as well. Items that are likely to be found at the farmer’s market over the summer include produce, baked goods, arts and crafts, meats, noodles, jams, and more.

In addition, there will be live musical acts to provide entertainment for shoppers, with a different act each week. Poole says the musical acts mostly come from the Kalona and southeast Iowa area, and will provide upbeat, positive music for shoppers to listen to as they visit different vendors.
