blood-donor-month-800

January is recognized as National Blood Donor Month. The observance encourages citizens to donate blood and platelets during a time of the year when they are most needed.

Donations typically dip in the winter months due to busy holiday schedules and bad weather. As Kirby Winn with ImpactLife explains, “Blood transfusions are given every day across our region, and yet we’ve just been through a time of the year when people are more busy. So often, the blood supply suffers, but the use of blood stays the same.”

Throughout January, Iowans are encouraged to check for local blood drives in their area, or set an appointment at their nearest donation center. ImpactLife has locations available in Coralville, Muscatine, and Burlington. Prior to the appointment, it is recommended that donors have a full stomach and stay hydrated. A pre-donation screening will be conducted prior to the procedure.
