Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus baseball suffered a pair of losses to start this week. The Wolves fell to Mediapolis 11-1 Monday night, hanging tough until the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the fifth inning to end the game early.
Trevor Phillips scored the lone run for WMU/Columbus and joined fellow juniors Kason Dopler, Gavin Prior and Jaxton Jones in each having one base hit.
The Wolves jumped out to the early lead last night against New London, scoring twice in each of the first two innings. But the Tigers added to a run in the third by scoring four times in the fourth and got one more in the fifth to get the 6-4 win.
Dopler and senior Lane Genkinger had two hits each to lead the lineup, while Jones also came up with a pair of knocks and scored a run. But the big blow came from senior Riley Kaalberg, who cracked a home run and finished the game with three runs batted in.
Still, it was not enough to keep Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus from falling to 3-9. The Wolves return to action tomorrow evening against Louisa-Muscatine.
