It would be the Sigourney Savages who came out on top Thursday in the boys’ portion of the annual Ekstrand Track and Field Relays in Wayland, piling up 138 points to end up 23 points ahead of the hosting WACO Warriors in the Class B division.
The team win for the Sigourney boys in Class B came in part because Troy Klett was a two-time individual champion, winning the mile run in four minutes 42 seconds and the two-mile in 10:21. Fellow junior Jayden Thompson was the Class B champ in the discus with a top toss of 144-and-three-quarters feet.
Klett was also part of the winning 4-by-400-meter relay time of 3:47 along with freshman Gauge Little and juniors Wyatt Wehr and John Berg, while a quartet of freshman won the 4-by-800 for the Savages in 9:34, including Little, Jordan Anderson, Isaac Jones and Levi Myers.
The shuttle hurdles relay of freshman Dillon Menke, sophomore Chase Clarahan, junior Owen Menke and senior Caden Clarahan added one more victory for Sigourney with a time of 1:05.
Caden Clarahan finished second in the 110-meter hurdles for the Savages, as did their distance medley relay. Klett and Thompson were third in the 400 and shot put, respectively, while Owen Menke won bronze in the 110 hurdles and Dillon Menke did the same in the 400 hurdles. Sigourney also took third in the sprint medley.
At their home of Roth Track & Field, WACO scored a victory in both medley relays. The team of sophomore Hayden Shelman, junior Jude Dykstra and seniors Isaac Rich and Gage Samo won the sprint in 1:38, while Shelman, Dykstra, Samo and senior Louden Huisenga took the distance medley in 3:41.
Dykstra was also second in both the 800 and 1,600-meter runs, as was Huisenga in the high jump; junior Garrett Landau in the two-mile; sophomore Sam Meyer in the discus; and the Warriors’ 4-by-100, 4-by-200 and shuttle hurdles relays. Shelman would take third in the long jump, as would Landau in the mile and freshman teammate Anthony Carroll in the 100-meter dash.
Winfield-Mount Union was led by two victories for Kohlby Newsom, the champion of the 400 meters in 50.43 seconds and the 800 in nearly two minutes flat. Fellow senior Cooper Buffington won the shot put with a top toss of 39 feet two-and-three-quarter inches. Freshman Cruz Hagmeier added a win for the Wolves in the 110 hurdles in almost 16 seconds and was also second in the 400 hurdles.
