Summer is nearly here,  and for many Iowans that means travel and vacations with families. The Iowa Department of Transportation wants to remind residents that beginning on May 7th individuals will need a Real ID for boarding commercial flights in the United States and accessing certain federal buildings.

To obtain a Real ID, residents are required to show proof of their full legal name; date of birth; Social Security number; lawful status; and two proofs of address. This can be done by scheduling an appointment with the Washington County Treasurer.

Residents are only required to go through the Real ID process once. Those who require ID or license renewal prior to the May 7th deadline can make their identification REAL ID compliant as part of the renewal process, while those that expire after May 7th can get one at the regular replacement cost of $10.

Driver’s licenses or state ID cards that are not Real ID will not be valid for boarding commercial aircraft or entering certain government buildings once the Real ID Act goes into effect. They are still valid for driving and other purposes.
