As the high school girls’ basketball postseason continues, three local teams will be trying to earn their spot in this year’s Class 1A and 2A regional semifinals. That includes the Lone Tree Lions, who will host Holy Trinity Catholic in Class 1A Region 7.

Lone Tree has a record of 19-3 and has been dominant most of the season, winning 17 of their last 18 games. The Lions are a dominant defensive team that gives up only 33-and-a-half points per game and forces 15 steals per contest.

Junior Finley Jacque leads Lone Tree in scoring with almost 16 points a game, while senior point guard Vivian Zaruba does a little bit of everything for the team, posting averages of nearly 9.5 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals. The Lions are taking on a Holy Trinity team that is 15-6 and has been equally impressive on defense, giving up only about 38 points per game.

The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves will take on Springville in a Region 7 quarterfinal. Four wins in the last five games has WMU peaking at the right time, led by freshman Kynlee Buffington’s nearly 13.5 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots per contest.

Junior Madisen Kellogg is also putting up nearly 12 points, six boards and two steals a game for the Wolves, who have an overall record of 6-16. Winfield-Mount Union faces a Springville squad that is 17-4 and ranked seventh in the state in 1A. Junior Rowan Jacobi averages over 23 points and 12 rebounds per game for the Orioles.

The Columbus Wildcats will begin their postseason journey by hosting West Burlington in Class 2A Region 2. Columbus is in the middle of arguably the best season in program history, winning their first conference championship and entering the playoffs at 17-4.

A stout defense that gives up only 38 points and force over 17 steals a game powers the Wildcats, as does senior Lily Coil and her nearly 16 points and nine rebounds per contest.

Junior Isabel Rendon also scores 11 points per game for Columbus, while senior point guard Ariana Vergara posts almost 10 points, 3.5 assists and 4.5 steals per contest. The ‘Cats collide with a West Burlington team that is 8-14. All regional quarterfinal games this evening tip off at 7 o’clock.
