Over the last five years, Iowa has had a syphilis surge according to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. Statewide there has been a 268% increase in infectious syphilis, a nearly 800% increase among females, and a 333% increase in congenital syphilis. Since 2002 the U.S. syphilis rates have increased from two to 18 per 100,000 people.
The state report states that while most new infections are among white males, all populations and geographic regions are being affected. Also, disparities among Black and Hispanic Iowans persist. At this time, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology is recommending that pregnant women be screened three times.
Screening based on risk factors should be discussed with a medical provider. Treatment is available and is determined by stage of the illness.
