Education for English language learners was discussed at the recent Washington Community School Board meeting. Curriculum director Veta Thode said the number of English language learners, which is now called LIEP, language instruction educational program, has nearly tripled since 2010. In the 2010-2011 year Washington had 55 LIEP students and this year there are 141 in the district.

Brandi Kauffman, who teaches at Stewart Elementary, explained Imagine Learning, a program she uses to teach LIEP students. The program is paid through the Grant Wood Area Education Association and is used individually by each student on an iPad. The computer program has 69 instructional strands so the program tailors the lessons for each student, working on their weak points. Students use head phones and records the students speaking. In total, 23 students use Imagine Learning.
