Many of the seventeen seniors on the Washington Demon football team (6-3) made an impact in their final game at Case Field Friday. The Demons scored a program-best 81 points in a shutout victory over the winless Fort Madison Bloodhounds (0-9).
It was a night to remember for third-string running back David Mares. He carried the ball six times for a career-high 93 yards and two touchdowns. Mares opened the game’s scoring on a 35-yard touchdown run less than 90 seconds into the game. He played in four games prior to Friday’s season finale. He accounted for 21 carries for 172 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Mares was one of four Demon seniors to score a touchdown versus Fort Madison. Bryce Sinn and Aaron Vittetoe caught first-half touchdowns, while Trey Van Weelden found the end zone on a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The victory ends Washington’s season at 6-3 overall and 4-3 in district play. The Demons lose Mares, Sinn, Vittetoe, Van Weelden, Caleb Bex, Bryce Craff, Jack Carter, John Dillon, Gabe Greiner, Austin Hazelett, Wil Marek, John Sands, Karlton Skubal, Seth Townsen, James Zabel, Jacob Reighard and Matt Reighard to graduation.
