Ten-year-old Emeline Dunham of Wapello has been selected as one of the 13 Kid Captains who will join the Iowa Hawkeyes football team on the field this season. Starting in 2009, the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes have partnered to honor pediatric patients through the Kid Captain program. Dunham will have the honor of joining the team during the Wisconsin game on October 22nd.
Emeline was born with Down syndrome in the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, and has since been diagnosed with several additional health problems. However, those close to her say despite her many health challenges, she is a positive girl known for her hugs and the joy she brings. The Kid Captain program celebrates inspirational stories like hers, and focuses on reminding people of the strength and determination of the young people involved.
