Organic operations in the United States grew by 71% since 2011 and in Iowa during the same time period the number increased by 47%. Washington County has the fourth highest number of organic operations per county in Iowa with 47, behind Johnson, Buchanan and Davis counties. Washington County has crop, livestock, and handling or processor organic operations. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Census of Ag in 2012, Washington County’s organic agriculture had $3,373,000 in sales with 36 farms. Across the state there are only five counties that have no organic operations.
