391 vehicles were stopped when they passed through a traffic safety checkpoint this week. On Thursday, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office was joined by K9’s from the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office and Fairfield Police Department, the State Patrol, the Mt. Pleasant as wells as the New London Police Department, and many others to conduct the checkpoint on Grand Avenue from the US 34 underpass to Winfield Avenue.

Out of the nearly 400 motorists stopped, 13 were issued citations and four were arrested. One was arrested for driving with a suspended license, while the others were taking into custody on possession of narcotics and possession of paraphernalia.

Henry County Sheriff Rich McNamee says his department hasn’t sponsored a traffic safety checkpoint in 20 years. He says with help from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, they may begin to do one annually.

-1 seatbelt and child restraint citation

-driving under suspension

-24 warnings registration violations (primarily license plate obstruction)

-3 open containers

-2 warnings for dark tint

-3 narcotic arrests (alleged to be marijuana)

-2 tickets for no insurance, 16 warnings

-24 canine searches, 5 hits (substance identified by K9)
