The Washington Demons won their third straight on the pitch Monday evening, sprinting past SEC foe Fairfield 5-1.
Washington controlled the game early, with a large portion of the first half being played in Fairfield territory. Despite that, it’d take 29 minutes for the Demons to strike gold, with Angeline Anderson scoring on a breakaway to go up 1-0. Anderson would score again just five minutes later, on the same kind of look, to give the Demons a 2-0 advantage. Allie Wulf would then get behind the Fairfield defense with just two minutes until half to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Fairfield looked like they’d turn things around in the second half, keeping better control of the ball, and eventually getting on the board following a Lexi Mast screamer off the crossbar. Washington would sweat a bit with a penalty kick awarded to the Trojans following a handball, but Aleigha Medley read Mast’s attempt perfectly, keeping the game at 3-1.
The Demons found two more insurance goals. Ashley Ramirez powered one home with a right-footed blast from outside the box, and Anderson made it a hat trick with her own shot outside the box. Washington tried to make it six for the day, but ultimately had to settle for the 5-1 win.
Washington head coach Mason Quigley says “Especially when they’ve got momentum building, and we have an accidental handball in the box, always happens for us, it seems, every season, but that’s why she’s in there. She’s been there for us for four years now, and she’s been in big moments, so I’m happy to see that she was came out and was able to get the stop for us.”
Washington improves to 3-2 on the campaign. The Demons will face Burlington on the road Tuesday. The Greyhounds defeated Fairfield earlier this season, also by a four-goal margin.
