The Washington Demons pushed through a cold and windy Tuesday afternoon to defeat the Hillcrest Ravens 2-0 in boys soccer action.
With the wind gusting and temperatures dropping toward the low 40s, it was a chilly few hours for both the players and the spectators. For the first 30 minutes, it seemed as if the weather would play a significant factor, with neither side really threatening and not a whole lot of work for either goalkeeper. With 7 minutes to go until halftime, it would be Washington who finally broke through, with senior Keven Raymundo scoring off a free kick into the box to give the Demons a 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, Hillcrest tried desperately to get the ball forward and create opportunities, but the Washington midfield and defense seemed to be on top of the ball at every opportunity. The minutes came and went, and Washington held firm, even scoring a last second goal on a rainbow over the keeper by sophomore midfielder Xavi Recendez. The final whistle soon sounded, giving Washington the victory.
Recendez spoke with KCII after the game. He says the midfield was positioning well, allowing them to control possession and keep the ball away from their net. “I thought we were moving well, the ball well, towards the end of the first half. And, yeah, I feel like our movements were good, when we felt that goal go in, it was nice, got us all hyped up.”
Washington improves to 2-0, while Hillcrest starts its season with a loss. Washington will host Highland this Friday, while Hillcrest will head to West Liberty on the same date.
