Each day of Severe Weather Awareness Week has a different severe weather focus. Wednesday is preparedness.

National Weather Service (NWS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) remind residents that before a severe weather event you should be weather-ready by monitoring forecast information, including watches and warnings, through a trusted news source like a local radio station or weather radio. Have a plan that includes a designated shelter and practice that plan and to be aware of warning systems including outdoor sirens, media and smartphone alerts.

People should have some supplies on hand in case a severe storm rolls through the area. In your home, it is recommended to have two gallons of water per person per day, non-perishable food, and medication. It is also recommended to have some supplies, including food and water, ready for any pets.

In cars, have a blanket, snack bars, jumper cables, a flash light and water.

Severe Weather Awareness Week continues Thursday with a look at hail and wind hazards and safety. The statewide tornado drill will be held at 10 a.m. today, listen to KCII then for live coverage of the event.
