The City of Kalona is looking toward the future regarding its tennis and temporary pickleball courts.
The council was given a presentation on Monday over the scope of work on the east side of City Park. The work would be done by a professional, outside company, Pro Track and Tennis of Nebraska, including a commercial expandable crack seal on the existing surface, a new overlay, and lines for four pickleball courts and a full tennis court. The council approved the design of the courts and have signed on with the company to perform the work for $50,000.
Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says the project’s goal is to continue to improve upon the work already done, “Which is pretty much what we have there now, but we are going to have it done professionally and have a better product than some of the attempts that we made last time. It worked out great, but it wasn’t necessarily commercially recreational done. So we’re going to go with a company that has a little more expertise in that.”
Schlabaugh says the pickleball courts will be permanent due to the community’s embracing and overwhelming support of the courts. Work will take place in April and May, once temperatures stabilize.
