The Highland Nutrition Department has introduced a new snack program for elementary school students.

The “Fuel Our Classrooms” program is intended to help younger students stay focused in the classroom by providing snacks  during the day. Highland Food and Nutrition Director Rachel Cerny says that this keeps students concentrated, “With the longer school day, we figured out that our students, especially the younger ones are benefitting from having a snack in the afternoon to help give them that little boost of energy and concentration to get them through the end of the school day.”

The program is funded by anyone who donates money for the snacks for the students. The snacks are then delivered to the students at a set aside time in the day.

The snacks are intended to be healthy snacks, in compliance with the Healthy Kids Act, Cerny explains “Things we have available are Goldfish crackers, Scooby Snacks, fruit cups, whole grain Rice Krispy bars, juice boxes, water. All that is available to meet the Healthier Alliance for Kids Smart Snacks standards which means they’re a green product or a whole grain product. The fruit is no sugar added, and the juice is 100% juice, so kids are getting the nutrients they need.”
