The Washington County Board of Supervisors heard their options on the lot that they have for sale in downtown Washington.
The parcel is located at 302 West Main Street across from the Washington County Courthouse, and has been empty since 2018. The Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of the 66-foot by 82-foot lot in 2017 for $50,000. It previously had a house with a business on the lot that was demolished. It is currently zoned for retail business, and was listed with Elliott Realty, now a part of Century 21, for $25,000 in December.
This was out for public bid in 2023, and only received one bid of $8,000, which was not accepted by the board. After the bid was opened and declined, the direction of listing the property with a realtor was given and approved by the Board of Supervisors. That step was not taken until November of 2025.
Two offers were presented to the Board this week. The first was for $15,000 cash and held no contingencies. The second was for $20,000 and stated that it would proceed if the lot would be able to be rezoned to residential so a home could be constructed in the future.
The board voted to delay action on the matter. They have instructed the realtor to contact the individual that offered the $15,000 and to counter with $20,000. The item will be added to the next agenda for further discussion.
In order to rezone the parcel, the owner would need to go through the appropriate steps with the City of Washington’s planning and zoning commission and then city council.
