The Highland Huskies and Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves will match up in the first round of the Class 1A Region 6 tournament tonight in a contest you can catch on KCII.
Not many teams have been able to keep up with the Huskies this season, as Highland is 19-3 and a perfect 16-0 within the SEISC-North. However, the Huskies come into tonight on a loss, having lost 70-41 to Class 3A #9 Mediapolis in the SEISC Shootout championship game. Highland is outscoring its opponents by just over 19 points a game this year, even with the 29-point setback on Saturday. Sophomore Kamryn Fink continues to put up monster numbers, averaging over 17 points a game while pulling down an average of 12 rebounds, but juniors Hailey Brun and Katelynn Thomann can also be relied on for points, while freshman Kinzie Ruess and senior Mackenzie Davis often contribute in the rebounding department.
On the other side, Winfield-Mt. Union hasn’t found themselves on the winning side too often this season at just 3-18, 1-15 in the SEISC-North. Improvement has been the name of the game for the Wolves, and late in the season, it looks like that improvement has paid off. WMU comes into tonight on a two-game winning streak, first breaking an 18-game losing skid with a win over WACO, and a big victory over Cedar Valley Christian in the SEISC Shootout. Senior Madisen Kellogg is the primary scorer for the Wolves at 15.4 points per game. Junior Suttyn Schlee has also emerged late in the season as a secondary option, now averaging 6.9 points a night.
This will be the third meeting between the Huskies and the Wolves this season, with Highland taking the first two in dominant fashion, 67-17 and 56-26.
Tonight’s playoff contest can be heard on FM106.1, the KCII1 app, and kciiradio.com. Pregame will start at 6:30 p.m., with tip-off at 7. Tonight’s winner will advance to face the winner between Keota and Hillcrest Academy.
