The Sigourney boys and girls basketball teams closed the South Iowa Cedar League portion of their campaigns Monday with a trip to North Mahaska. The Savage boys held on late for a 60-55 win. Sigourney trailed 15-14 after the first. They scored 13 straight in the second period to take a 36-22 lead into halftime. North Mahaska outscored Sigourney 33-24 in the second half, cutting the lead to three points before a key Brayden Wood rebound, and Landon Fisch steal secured the win. Following the contest, Sigourney senior John Berg joined the KCII Postgame show to talk about the win. “Rebounding is about determination. You have to want to get the rebound. It’s for the team. You have to do it. I have to get the highest positioning and get the ball. In the biggest games, rebounding really matters. You have to get it done. Our outside shooting really opens things up inside and with driving lanes. Like tonight, they were guarding Solon (Yates) and Jordan (Tremmel) face up and we just got everything we wanted inside. I like how we attacked. I thought we played really well on defense. We tightened up and that’s what won us the game.”

Sigourney outrebounded the Warhawks by 10, knocked down eight threes and won turnovers 17-13. Jordan Tremmel had a big night, scoring 19 points on five threes, all five in the first half. Brayden Wood added 14 points and Berg added a 10 point, 11 rebound double double. The Warhawks were led by 12 points from Trenton DeBruin. The win moves Sigourney to 16-4 while North Mahaska is 9-12.

The Sigourney girls came up short 72-51. The Warhawks led 20-14 after the first. Down 11, Sigourney put together 10 straight points to force a North Mahaska timeout and get within one. The Warhawks ran in nine in a row going into half with a 39-29 lead. The Warhawks outscored the Savages 32-22 after half, including 17-8 in the third to take the win. North Mahaska was led by a 22 point, 14 rebound double double from Nataliya Linder. Addisen Falb had 17 points, 14 for Carly Lake and 13 for Jade DeBoef. Brynn Clarahan led Sigourney with a 29 point, eight rebound and five steal performance. The Savages drop to 14-7 with the loss and the Warhawks are 15-6.
