
The Highland and Lone Tree girls basketball teams look to shine under the final four Southeast Iowa Superconference spotlight this afternoon when they entertain south division foes Mediapolis and Danville in a doubleheader you can hear on KCII.
Lone Tree finds themselves in a No. 2 seed rematch from last year’s girls shootout when they meet the Danville Lady Bears to begin the afternoon. The Lady Lions enter 14-6 on the year after wrapping up a 12-4 conference slate. Lone Tree got to four wins in a row Tuesday taking down rival Hillcrest 52-38 on their home floor on senior night. Finley Jacque led with 19, while Abby Zaruba and Adi Parizek each had a double-double. This season, Lone Tree scores 53 points per game and gives up 43, shooting 33% from the field, 22% from three and 50% at the foul line. The Lady Lions are top five in Class 1A as a bunch with over 17 offensive rebounds per game. Individually, Jacque is top dog in the north division with over 19 points per game.
Danville is 13-5, 10-4 in the SEISC South, winners of eight straight. Their last action came in a 63-23 win over New London January 30th. Violette Sowell paced the Lady Bears with 15 points. This year, Danville scores 53 points per game and gives up 37, shooting 42% from the field, 23% from deep and 55% at the line. They own the second-best marks in the south as a team in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks a night. Individually, Alaina Gourley scores 17 an outing, with eight-and-a-half boards and nearly five steals.
Lone Tree owns the series with Danville 6-3 in the Varsity Bound era dating back to 2012. The matchup last year was a 50-26 Lady Lion win at Loren Walker Arena at Southeastern Community College.
After completing their first unbeaten conference campaign in program history, the Highland Huskies will play for Superconference gold in the back half of the doubleheader. The Huskies are 19-2 on the year after a wild 63-59 double overtime win on the road Monday at Louisa-Muscatine. Kamryn Fink had a near triple-double of 28 points, 24 rebounds and eight steals to lead. This year, Highland scores 56 points per game and gives up 35, shooting 38% from the field, 24% from downtown and 56% from the line. Their near 46 rebounds per game are second-most in the state, and their assists and steals per game top five in 1A. Individually, Fink is top five in 1A with 13 boards and six steals a game, scoring 17 to lead at 42% field goal shooting.
Mediapolis is ranked No. 9 in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union in Class 3A, and are back-to-back south division champs. They are unbeaten at 20-0 after a 56-35 home win against Fort Madison Monday. Ellah Wagenbach and Amelia Grier combined for 37 in the win. On the year, Mepo scores 67 points per game and gives up 26, shooting a 3A-best 43% from the field, 35% from deep and 63% from the stripe. As a team, their 20 assists per game are second-best in the state, and they are the 3A leader with 19 steals a night. Individually, Grace Holsteen, Wagenbach, Josie Hutcheson and Grier each score in double figures per game. The Bullettes own the series with the Huskies 25-7 dating back to 2007 in the Varsity Bound era, winners of the last 13.
