It’s Southeast Iowa Superconference Shootout day for the WACO Warrior boys basketball team, as they match up with south division foe West Burlington in the No. 4 seed game tonight on the KCII.
WACO will represent the north division at 10-9 overall, 10-5 in league play after a loss Tuesday at rival Winfield-Mt. Union 54-31. Holden Hughes and Hayden Shelman each had eight to lead WACO. This season, the Warriors score 53 points per game and give up 50, shooting 39% from the field, 31% from three and 64% at the line, all top three or better in the division. They pull down 31 rebounds, average 13-and-a-half assists and poke out nine steals per contest. Individually, Hughes and Shelman pace the Warriors with each scoring in double figures a night. WACO head coach Chayse Roth breaks down the matchup with the Falcons with KCII Sports.
“ I think the biggest thing for us is just to be confident and make sure that we play a physical game and make sure that we don’t let them dictate our offense and our defense, and we play our game plan and go out and execute the way we want to,” Roth said.
West Burlington is 10-8 overall, 8-6 in the SEISC South and the loser of a rivalry game at home Tuesday to Burlington 56-49. Ayden Figuereo and Silas Lotzow each scored in double figures. This year, West Burlington scores 56 points per game and gives up 52, shooting 42% from the field, 32% from deep and 63% at the stripe, with 30 rebounds, 10 assists, six steals, a south division-best four blocks, and nine-and-a-half turnovers per game. The individual leader is Figuereo with top five marks in the league in points, rebounds and blocks a night. The Falcons own a 9-4 lead in the series with WACO dating back to 2009 in the Varsity Bound era.
