The Sigourney Savage boys and girls basketball teams swept away the visitors from Moravia Thursday night in doubleheader action. The Sigourney girls opened the night with a 56-35 win. The contest was close early as the Savages were without five players due to illness and injury. Sigourney led 15-9 after one and 28-25 at half. The Savages clamped down on defense after the break, allowing just 11 second half points, only three made field goals, and put the Mohawks through a six and a half minute drought from the floor, before closing on a 13-1 run to seal the win. Sigourney player of the game Ella Bruns joined the KCII Postgame Show to talk about the victory. “Defensively, it was important to get up on them, not letting them get a shot and going after loose balls. Those things also help us get offensive going. Seeing steals from Brynn (Clarahan), getting back, getting fast breaks. The press is so much fun. (On offense), it was moving the ball and finding open people. Devyn (Smallwood) had some great post moves, Brynn (Clarahan) had a bunch of good shots. Seeing people on the bench who don’t normally get a lot of minutes come up and make some big shots was helpful.”
Brynn Clarahan was dynamic for Sigourney in the win, scoring 30 points eight steals and seven rebounds. Bailey Gretter added 10 points. The Savages won the boards by seven and forced 30 Mohawk turnovers. Moravia was led by a 16 points night from Jaime Self. Sigourney is 14-6 with the win the win, the Mohawks are now 9-11.
The boys game saw the Savages methodically pull away for a 76-59 win. Sigourney was up 19-17 after the first and 42-35 at half. Sigourney pushed the lead to a dozen going to the fourth, holding Moravia to nine third quarter points before finishing the game with execution in the half court and on the glass. The Savages won rebounding by nine, turnovers nine to eight and knocked down 12 threes as a team. Nine of those long balls belonged to Solon Yates as the senior set a new Sigourney single game record. He joined the KCII Postgame Show live to talk about the record and the win. “Once you get in a groove you’re like ‘okay, yeah, that feels good off the hand’. My teammates always do a good job of finding me. (Moravia) mixed up their defense quite a bit tonight, but we just kept moving off the ball. (My favorite three) was probably just my first one. It’s always nice to see the first one go in and it was a crazy bounce. (The record) is a good feeling, but it’s not something I sit there and think about. It’s a pretty cool thing to have. Late game situations, we’re pretty experience and don’t get rushed.”
John Berg added a 16 point, 15 rebound double double in the Sigourney effort. Moravia got 22 points from Declan DeJong. The Savages are now 15-4 while Moravia dips to 14-7. Sigourney will take on North Mahaska Monday.
