For the Mid-Prairie faithful, it was a fun night. The Golden Hawks traveled down to Washington and came away with two wins, 61-40 in the girls’ contest and 68-57 in the boys’ contest.
Mid-Prairie were the favorites going into the girls’ contest, with the Golden Hawks being state-ranked in Class 3A, and they didn’t disappoint. Despite facing a solid Washington squad, Mid-Prairie seemed unfazed, using quick ball movement and fast breaks to overwhelm the Demons and open up a lead. Mid-Prairie lead 13-8 after the first, and put the lead into double-digits, 32-21, by halftime. The Hawks refused to let Washington get back into the contest, outscoring the Demons in each of the last two quarters as well to pick up their sixth straight win, 61-40.
Tessa Bombei led the Golden Hawks with 17 points, with Brooklyn Schneider’s 12 and Morgyn Bender’s 10 backing her up. Adalyn Long and Reagan Miller each had 10 to lead the Demons.
Mid-Prairie head coach Jenny Hobbs said she was proud of the way the team responded to playing on a Monday night. “Playing Monday night, we don’t have a lot of prep time. So I was really pleased with the girls with how focused they were on, after school going through walkthrough with our scouting report, and I thought they did a really good job of putting that into play tonight.”
Mid-Prairie improves to 13-5 for the season, Washington drops to 10-8.
In the boys’ contest, it seemed like Washington would have the edge, starting the game on a 7-0 run and generally running Mid-Prairie up and down the floor. However, the Golden Hawks bounced back, beginning with creeping back a little bit in the first quarter before embarking on a long run in the second to take their first lead of the game. A back-and-forth battle ensued, leading to a two-point Demon lead at the half, 29-27. The third quarter was the difference maker. Mid-Prairie hit an open three to begin the scoring, and followed that up with 22 more points over the next seven minutes, outscoring Washington 25-16 to take a 52-45 lead. Try as they might, the Demons could not seem to force the Golden Hawks to crack, and Mid-Prairie completed the night’s sweep, 68-57.
Brooks Weber led the Golden Hawks with 20 points, with 12 in the first half and 8 in the second half. Three other Mid-Prairie players, Hudson Ehrenfelt, Bryce Henry, and Carson Humphrey, all reached double-digits. Nic Stone led the Demons, and by extension, all scorers, dropping seven triples for 21 total points.
Mid-Prairie head coach Darren Lambert says the things went pretty much according to plan, all night long. “We knew they were going to be a talented team and we had to match their effort and intensity and we did that for the most part, especially in that second half. Switching to a zone in the third quarter I think kind of threw them for a loop and got us that lead, and then they responded back and were able to adjust. So I’m just really proud of our guys to kind of go back and forth with the different looks we threw at them tonight.”
The Golden Hawks are now 12-5 on their campaign. The Washington boys fall to 10-7. Mid-Prairie will next face off against Tipton later tonight, a double-header you can catch on KCII, while Washington will wait until Friday for another meeting with Fort Madison.
