It was part two of a rivalry showdown between the Sigourney Savages and the Keota Eagles Friday night at Sigourney High School, and it was Sigourney capturing both ends of the South Iowa Cedar League double dip heard live on the KCII3 Stream.
In the girls game, Sigourney was attempting to avoid being swept on the season by the Eagles for the first time since the 2013-14 season. They rose to the challenge, winning by a final of 60-54. The Savages led 13-10 after the first quarter and used two separate runs of 8-0 and 6-0 in the second period to extend the lead to 32-23 at the break. Out of the locker rooms, it was Keota that raced right back into the contest with a 7-0 run of their own, eventually leading to a slim 45-43 Savage advantage heading into the fourth frame. With many Eagle starters in foul trouble, Sigourney went 7-for-10 from the charity stripe in the final eight minutes to secure the win.
Unofficially, Sigourney won rebounds and turnovers by three and six, respectively, including a 30-16 advantage on the glass in the second half. Co-Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game, Brynn Clarahan, led the way with a game-high 25, followed by Bailey and Becca Gretter’s combined 22. After the game, Clarahan caught up with KCII Sports to talk about the win.
“It is awesome,” Clarahan said. “I mean, every single girl wants it really bad, so when every girl plays with confidence like they did tonight, I think we’re gonna be a hard team to beat. So I’m really proud of them and they’re really committed. So it’s awesome to see. I’m just proud of my teammates. It’s a rivalry, so it’s always nice to come out on top.”
Keota was led by Cameron Haifley’s 20. With the win, the Savages advance to 12-5 overall, 9-5 in the SICL. The Eagles drop to 13-5 on the season, 8-5 in league play.
In the boys game, it was a win comeback style for Sigourney 77-64. Keota raced out of the gates early, taking a 20-8 lead after the first and maintaining the lead 38-31 at the half. Sigourney flipped the script completely in the third, going on a blistering 24-11 run to take the lead for the first time all night at 55-49 heading into the final period. Even with star post John Berg out with an ankle injury, the Savages were not phased, netting an additional seven more points in the fourth to pad the final tally and the win.
Unofficially, Sigourney finished with a rebounding advantage of 35-24, including 23-6 in the second half. Turnovers were tied at 13 on each side. Individually, Ike Molyneux and Brayden Wood earned co-Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game honors, as both were tied with a game-high 23. Molyneux joined KCII Sports postgame to break down the night.
“We feel like we’re right where we need to be, and I mean, it’s a great accomplishment. Beating Keota twice, obviously we don’t do that a whole lot, so it’s nice to see that our team has improved that much over these years,” Molyneux said.
Keota was paced by 21 from senior Chase Haifley in his final game against rival Sigourney. With the win, the Savages are 13-4 dropping Keota to 12-5.
