
It’s twice is nice this season for the Area Game of the Week when it comes to featuring a heated South Iowa Cedar League basketball rivalry between the hosting Sigourney Savages and the Keota Eagles tonight on the KCII3 Stream.
The home Savage girls are 10-5 on the year, 7-5 in the SICL after a loss Tuesday against state ranked Lynnville-Sully 64-34. Sigourney was outscored by the Hawks in each period in the loss. This season, Sigourney scores 51 points per game and gives up 44, shooting 30% from the field, 25% from three and 57% at the line, with over nine assists and 14 steals per game, both top five marks in the SICL. Individually, Brynn Clarahan is the state’s leader with nearly eight steals per game, scoring a conference-high 22 points a night.
Keota enters 13-4, 8-4 in league play winners of two straight. They were a 54-28 winner at Colfax-Mingo Tuesday. Cameron Haifley scored 21 to lead all Eagles, followed by Elyse Lyle’s double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds. On the season, Keota scores 53 points per game and gives up 37, shooting 36% from the field, 27% from deep and 60% from the stripe. Keota owns the glass more than any other team in the SICL, collecting 35 boards per game. The individual leader is Haifley, who sits right behind Clarahan in the league in scoring with 16 points an outing.
Sigourney owns a 29-8 series lead over Keota in the Varsity Bound era, winners of 22 of the last 23. However, Keota took the first matchup of the season in December and is seeking their first season sweep of Sigourney since the 2013-14 campaign.
The Sigourney boys also fell Tuesday to Lynnville-Sully 74-52, dropping their record to 11-4 on the year, 9-3 in the SICL. John Berg led the way with 12 points and six rebounds, with Jordan Tremmel making double figures at 10 points to follow. On the year, Sigourney scores 63 points per game and gives up 45, shooting 46% from the field, 31% from downtown and 59% at the line. The team is tied at the top of the conference with over four blocks per game. Individually, Berg makes the league top five in six different statistical categories, scoring 16 points per game.
The Eagle boys will take the floor 12-4 on the season, 8-4 in SICL play after picking up a victory at Colfax-Mingo Tuesday 64-41. Chase Haifley poured in 24 points, Porter Cave had 16 and Jackson Vittetoe 12. Through 16 games, Keota scores 61 points per game and gives up 47, shooting 42% from the floor, 29% from deep and 52% at the line. Their 18 assists per game are third most in Class 1A. Individually, Haifley scores a team-high 15 per night, dishes out five assists and pulls down five boards.
The Eagles lead the boys’ series 31-10 in the Varsity Bound era. They will look to avoid being swept by Sigourney for the first time since the 2014-15 season this evening.
