The Washington Demons will look for a second sweep of the Fairfield Trojans tonight at home in a doubleheader you can hear on KCII.
Both Washington teams picked up comfortable wins over the Trojans earlier this season, but with no truly weak teams in the Southeast Conference this season, the Demons will still need to be at their best. Washington’s girls are 8-7, and with a recent losing streak within the conference, are now in fourth place in the SEC at 3-3. The Demons are two games back from Fort Madison and Burlington, who are tied for second.
Washington’s girls average 43.9 points a game this season, and allow 41.9 points a game. The Demons have become a team known for its stingy defense, frequently holding teams well under their season averages. Despite back-to-back losses against state-ranked Tipton and Class 5A Ottumwa, Washington have put up a good fight through their defensive play.
Fairfield is 3-11 and have lost five straight. The Trojans are fifth in the conference, two games back from Washington. The team averages 35.1 points a game this season, and allow just over 50. Like Washington, Fairfield can struggle to score at times, with their leading scorer, senior Faith Jones, averaging only 7.6 points per game.
Earlier this season, Washington knocked off Fairfield 53-29. Adalyn Long led the Demons with 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Elyse Setterstrom led the Trojans with 11.
The Washington boys are 9-5 and coming off a tough 67-58 win over Ottumwa. The team is 3-3 in the conference, two games back from second place Burlington, and a half game ahead of fourth place Mount Pleasant. Washington has found most of its recent success through its guard play, with Drew Conrad, Nic Stone, Rajan Roth, and Kael Williams all finding big numbers in recent games. The Demons average 58.4 points per game, and allow 57.5, and have ultimately been a well balanced team on offense and defense.
Fairfield’s boys are 2-11 and 1-5 in the conference, a half game ahead of sixth place Fort Madison. The Trojans have lost five straight, and have been outscored by an average of 15 points this season. Ethan Bisgard is the team’s leading scorer, gathering just over 14 points a game. Eli Zillman also averages just over 9 a night.
Back in December, Washington picked up a 57-39 win over Fairfield, with Conrad and Stone combining for 36 of the 57 points. Those two will look to lead the charge again. Bisgard led the Trojans with 14.
Tonight’s doubleheader can be heard on FM106.1, the KCII1 app, and kciiradio.com. Pregame starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the tip-off of the girls’ game at 6.
