Tuesday night, the Sigourney Savage boys and girls basketball teams came up short in a South Iowa Cedar League doubleheader at home against top ten Lynnville-Sully.

In the girls contest the No. 5 Hawks were a 64-34 winner. A tough shooting night meant Sigourney faced an 11-5 deficit after one and were down 28-15 going into the half. The Hawks outscored the Savages 36-19 after break. The Hawks won the glass 39-30, assists 15-4, steals 8-7 and out shot the Savages 53-23%. Lynnville-Sully remains unbeaten at 16-0 while Sigourney drops to 10-5.

The boys contest went the No. 9 Hawk’s way 74-52. A tight first quarter saw Sigourney down three at 18-15. The Hawks strung together a 17-7 run in the second to take a 35-22 lead into half. Lynnville outscored the Savages 39-30 after intermission for the win. The Hawks out shot the Savages 53-41%, winning the boards 41-17, assists 15-7 and turnovers 8-5. Sawyer Veldhuizen led the Hawks with 26 points and Will Van Vark added 16. The Savages had John Berg get to double figures with 12 points to go with six rebounds and three blocks. Jordan Tremmel added 10. Sigourney is 11-4 after the setback while the Hawks climb to 15-0.
