Monday was a historic day for the Sigourney-Keota girls wrestling program. The Savages stormed into Belle Plaine and laid claim to the program’s first ever team tournament and conference championships. SK scored 187 points to beat second place Iowa Valley’s 171. Three Savages were at the top of the podium with individual titles at the end of the day including Aubrey Utterback at 110lbs after a finals major decision over Lilly Briggs of North Mahaska. At 125lbs, Kia Montgomery claimed her championship by fall over Skyler Hoyt of Iowa Valley. At 155lbs, Karley Greiner pinned Maggie Kriegel of Iowa Valley to win gold. This week, SK head coach Trevor Weeks joined the KCII PM Sports Page to talk about what the team title means to the program and his three champions. “This is huge for our program. That’s our first tournament win. First trophy we ever took home and to have it happen at the conference tournament took a lot of people getting involved. I always tell people I’m not superstitious when it comes to sports, just a little ‘stitious’. I looked at the team scores during the tournament maybe three times. Aubrey Utterback wrestled one heck of a finals match. She stayed in good position and wrestled a complete match. I don’t think Belle Plaine’s gym has been that loud in a long time. Kia Montgomery had a heck of a tournament. Karley Greiner had a great finals match. It was electric on the floor. We rang the bell in front of the school. That’s the conference championship, state championship celebration bell.”
Other top performances for the Savages include runner-up for Amelia Phillips at 115lbs, Naveah Beinhart at 130lbs Abyl McCulley at 135lbs, Izzy Heisdorffer at 140lbs, and Melanie Woodsmall at 170lbs. Sadie Clarahan at 120lbs and Madison Clarahan at 190lbs were both third.
