The Highland Huskies took a trip to Wapello Friday for a Southeast Iowa Superconference basketball doubleheader with the Arrows and Indians and returned with a split set. The Highland girls remained unbeaten in conference with a 52-35 victory. The Huskies were on the run early up 14-4 after one and led 29-18 at the break. Highland held Wapello to just five third quarter points as they extended the lead to 17 and finished out the win. The Huskies out-shot the Arrows 36-33%, won rebounding 45-29, assists 12-7, steals 25-10 and turnovers 34-22. Kamryn Fink added to her collection of double doubles with a 12 point, 11 rebound performance that included five steals. Hailey Brun scored 15 points and Kinzie Ruess added 10. Emmalin Marshall led Wapello with 18 points. The win moved Highland to 15-2 overall and kept the Huskies unbeaten in league play at 13-0, clinching their first Superconference North Championship in 18 seasons. On this week’s KCII Radio Coaches Corner head coach Jody Fink talked about what that means to the program and says about this group. “For the program, it’s great! For this group, they have fought all year long. Now our goal is just to finish it out in style and keep everything moving. The win at Wapello was a great one and the championship is a great accolade for our girls!”
Wapello is 9-8 after the loss and 7-7 in conference play.
The boys matchup went the Indians way 63-48. It was Highland that enjoyed a fast start, up 17-9 after the first, but Wapello won the second and third quarters by a combined 37-12 to take away the lead and the win. The Indians out shot the Huskies 46-38%, won rebounds 41-27, assists 21-14, steals 15-7 and turnovers 17-10. Justyn Faulkner led Wapello with a double double at 16 points and 10 rebounds to go with seven steals. Chase Purdy added 14 and Treyton Schulz 12 points. Landon Roling had an 18 point, 14 rebound double double to lead the Dogs. Bryce Hazelett finished with 14 points. Wapello is 4-12 with the win, 4-9 in conference while Highland drops to 2-14 and 2-10 respectively.
