
A fire at a rural Wellman hog containment facility has resulted in the death of 250 pigs and the total loss of a building.
Fire crews were called to the facility at 3281 Y Avenue, about 6.5 miles north of Wellman, just after 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the emergency call described the building as fully engulfed. The Wellman Fire Department and Kalona Fire Department responded to the call.
The fire was extinguished. The building was considered to be a total loss. No other buildings were damaged.
Authorities say 250 pigs were killed in the blaze.
