The Winfield-Mt. Union boys and girls basketball teams hosted the Highland Huskies for a Southeast Iowa Superconference doubleheader Tuesday night. The home Wolves got the boys win 59-24. WMU started fast, with a 17-4 lead after one and an 18-8 second quarter run put them up 35-12 at the half. Out of the break, an 18-3 WMU run enacted the running clock and put the game out of reach. WMU head coach Klay Edwards joined KCII Sports this week to talk about what led to his team’s success. “I thought we did a good job of extending the defense and turning them over. From there, we were out and running and that allowed us to jump out early. We shot it better, but our sharing the ball was also good. Cody (Milks), Max (Edwards), and a handful of other guys really did a good job on the offensive glass.”
The Wolves shot 41% from the floor with 44 rebounds, 18 assists, 14 steals and just eight turnovers. Isaac Egli led the scoring with 15 points, adding seven assists, and Cody Milks turned in a 14 point, 14 rebound double double. The win lifted the Wolves to 10-4 on the year as Highland falls to 2-12.
The girls contest was a wire-to-wire win for the Huskies 56-26. The visitors led 14-5 after the first and 23-11 at half. Highland outscored WMU 33-15 after half, including an 18-6 third quarter run. The Huskies out shot the Lady Wolves 42-18%, won rebounds 49-32, assists 17-7, steals 21-14 and turnovers 27-23. Kamryn Fink finished with a rare triple double that featured 17 points, 19 rebounds and 11 steals. She also added six blocks and four assists. Mackenzie Davis had 14 points and Katelyn Thoman added a dozen points. Josslyn Roen led WMU with five points, Quin Smith grabbed 14 rebounds. The Huskies remain unbeaten in conference and stand at 14-2 overall while the Wolves dip to 1-15.
