waco-sigourney

The WACO Warriors and Sigourney Savages will take a break from their respective conferences to meet up in Sigourney for a doubleheader later tonight, a doubleheader you can hear on KCII.

On the girls side, two teams with ambitions of a deep run into the postseason will do battle. WACO is a game below .500 at 7-8, but have won six of their last eight games. However, the Warriors struggled their last time out, falling to Lone Tree 55-37. WACO is led by their strong junior class, with Brenna Graber, Madelyn Farmer, and Drew Graber leading the scoring charge. Farmer and Drew Graber also lead the team in rebounds, with fellow junior Carlee Lunsford doing most of her statistical work on the glass as well.

On the other side, Sigourney is 9-4 this season and are winners of four of their last five. The Savages feature one of the state’s best pure scorers in Brynn Clarahan. The sophomore is averaging 23.2 points per game this season, good for tenth best in the entire state. Clarahan also leads the team in the rebounding department, pulling down an average of 7.3 boards per game. Around Clarahan, junior Bailey Gretter and senior Addy Fineran can also be relied on to score if needed, although the Savages do only score 46.5 points per game.

Sigourney leads the season series 7-2 since 2017, with the teams playing twice last season. In the regular season matchup, Sigourney won 64-42 behind Josephine Moore’s 19, and Clarahan’s 18. Later that season, the Savages ended WACO’s season with a 62-33 victory, with McKinley Chittick leading the way with 19. Clarahan had 17 in that matchup.

The boys game features two teams above .500 on the season. WACO is 8-6 and have won two straight. They won those games handily, winning by 20+ points in each contest. The Warriors are currently enjoying strong performances from Holden Hughes and Kellen Shelman. Hughes has scoring 25 points or more in each of WACO’s last two wins, and Shelman has right behind him in both games as well.

Sigourney is currently enjoying its own winning streak, having come out on top in each of its last three games. The Savages stomped the Tigerhawks of Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday, 82-35. Senior John Berg is putting up massive numbers this seasons, picking up 16.7 points a game this season, and coming close to a double-double with 9.3 rebounds per game. Fellow senior Solon Yates is also averaging double-digit points per game at 12.2 a night.

WACO leads the season series on the boys side 8-1 since 2017. The Savages have not won a game against the Warriors since 2021. Last season, WACO won 62-49 behind a 41-point performance from Christian Stacy.

Tonight’s doubleheader can be heard on FM106.1, the KCII1 app, and kciiradio.com starting at 5:30 p.m. with the Area Game of the Week Pregame Show. The girls tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the boys to follow.
