The Washington School Board discussed the school district’s five-year facility plan with the discussion focus being the future of the former middle school building on South 4th Avenue.
Superintendent Willie Stone presented some options to the board, “Talk about the middle school building. We’ve talked about several different options: demolish, repurpose, or sell the property. For us just to demolish it, the estimate is $1.4 million. To demolish the 1918 building and remodel the gym and 1952 classrooms that would cost us around $9.6 million to do. To demolish the 1918 building and 1950 classrooms and remodel the gym, that would cost us around $9.5 million. Demolish the entire building and build classrooms and gym, to build back new would cost us $8.7 million. And we could look at selling the property. So, I think the big thing will be the district needs to decide what we want to do with that property.”
The board discussed and agreed that they would like more information on what the estimate would be to sell the building and property as it is. Superintendent Stone will be reaching out to realtors to get more information on what the value would be, and he will be reporting back to the board. The next regular school board meeting will be held February 11th.
