One of the top rivalries in southeast Iowa basketball played out on the court Saturday when the Pekin Panthers hosted the Sigourney Savages for a boys and girls hoops doubleheader. The Sigourney girls were a runaway 63-31 winner. The Savages jumped out 17-7 after one and were on top 32-17 at the half. Out of the break, Sigourney sprinted to a 21-3 run that spanned the full third quarter to lead 53-20 going to the fourth. The Savages out shot the Panthers 38-27% and hit 10 threes. Sigourney had 27 rebounds, 15 steals, 14 assists and forced 27 Pekin turnovers. Brynn Clarahan had a monster 31 point day with five rebounds and five assists. Bailey Gretter finished with 17 points. Anna Hadley led Pekin with 10 points. Sigourney stood at 7-3 after the win while Pekin dropped to 6-5.

On the boys side, the Panthers got some revenge with a 48-45 win. The Savages led 11-8 after one and still held a slim lead at 21-20 going to half. The two teams played even in the third with 12 points each. The game was tied at 42 on a Brayden Wood basket with 90 seconds remaining. The Panthers got a dagger three from Cole Millikin with under a minute to go to take the lead at 45-42 and Solon Yates delivered a Sigourney triple to pull within 46-45 with 12 seconds left. The Panthers Henry Adam hit two free throws and the Pekin defense closed the game with a stand. Pekin out shot Sigourney 38-26%, winning rebounds 38-37 and turnovers 13-8. The Savages had 10 assists and six steals. Nolan Glick had a 12 point 15 rebound double double for Pekin. John Berg scored 12 for Sigourney, Solon Yates added 11 and Hunter Sellers grabbed 10 rebounds. Pekin moved to 8-3 with the win, Sigourney sinks to 6-3.
