hillcrest-columbus

It was a Southeast Iowa Superconference split at historic Hillcrest Union Tuesday with the Columbus girls and Hillcrest boys nabbing wins in the Area Game of the Week on the KCII3 Stream.

In the girls game, it was a 47-32 final in favor of the Wildcats. Columbus began the game on a hot 19-5 run, stretching the advantage five more to 28-9 at half. Out of the locker rooms, both sides shared an even third period before the ‘Cats put on the cruise control in the fourth, albeit surrendering a net five points in the process to get the win.

Unofficially, Columbus won rebounds by one and turnovers by eight. They were led on the night by Wildcat of the game Kennedy Woepking’s 15 points, followed by Iris Garza at nine and Isabel Rendon and Ellie Sanders’ eight each. After the game, Woepking joined KCII Sports to talk about the win.

“I feel like we were a little nervous. We haven’t been starting in games super hot, super energetic, and that just set it,” Woepking said. “I knew from that point on we had this game, we had the energy. We push each other every single practice, like it’s always between us and we’re so proud of each other. When it’s their night, it’s their night, and tonight was just my night.”

With the win, Columbus raises its record to 5-7 overall and 5-6 in the north division of the Superconference. The loss drops Hillcrest to 3-10 on the year and 1-9 in league play.

In the boys nightcap, it was the Ravens capturing a 78-42 win running clock style. Hillcrest opened on a 15-0 run to begin the game before Drew Totemeier finally found the answer for Columbus to get their night going. Totemeier would score the first 12 points of the night for the Wildcats, as his team trailed 21-7 after one quarter. In the second, the Ravens would add four more to their lead to make it a 35-17 game at halftime. Using a combined 43 points the rest of the way, Hillcrest was able to pull away and capture the dominant win.

Unofficially, Hillcrest won both rebounds and turnovers by eight. The individual leader was a game-high 23 points from sophomore Gibson Scott. He joined KCII Sports after the game to break down his night.

“I just saw opportunities and took them,” Scott said. “I feel like I challenged myself to be more aggressive. My coaches definitely, they challenged me to be more aggressive, so I was just looking to attack just a little bit more, but also be ready to dish it. And I think the lanes were there, we wanted to run on them and get them tired, and I think we did that. And Rowan [Miller] especially, he was looking ahead. I mean, he was hitting all different types of guys. So I think we did a great job running.”

Kale Bailey and Lincoln Miller also scored in double figures for the Ravens, combining for 32 points. Columbus was paced by 13 from Ellis Hills-Carrier. The Ravens improve to 11-1, while Columbus drops to 6-5.
