The state has dropped the charges related to a Louisa County man who was facing 51 felony charges of possessing child pornography. Curtis Canny was charged in March with 41 felony counts, following 10 charges filed in January.

According to court documents, a motion to suppress was placed in October related to items found on phones discovered when law enforcement executed search warrants related to Canny’s stepson, Coletrane Sipes. Sipes filed a written plea of guilty of aggravated misdemeanor stalking this fall related to a case of filming a student.

Canny and Sipes resided at the same address at the time of the investigation.

Records indicate a phone allegedly belonging to Canny was found in a common area of the home and recovered by authorities, who then obtained another warrant to search the electronic devices. Child pornography images were discovered.

According to court records, in light of the court’s ruling on Canny’s motion to suppress evidence, the state does not have sufficient admissible evidence to proceed to trial on any of the charges. The state moved to dismiss all charges and the costs will be assessed to the state. Court records show that Sipes was the sole target of law enforcement’s investigation, and any statement of probable cause referred to Sipes.

All 51 felony charges were dropped.
