It was a tough night at the office in Iowa City Tuesday for the Mid-Prairie boys and girls basketball teams as they dropped both ends of a River Valley Conference doubleheader to the Regina Regals on the road. The Golden Hawks got 12 from Bryce Henry. Golden Hawk head coach Daren Lambert joined the KCII postgame show to talk about what decided the contest. “Tonight it was about giving up offensive rebounds. They are a big presence in their. Physically, length-wise, we knew it was going to be tough for us tonight. In those moments where Regina went on a run, we didn’t do a great job on the boards on gave them second-chances. When you are good enough defensively to play it out and get a miss, you have to make sure that possession stops at one shot, and they started the game out with back-to-back and ones, because we gave up offensive rebounds. We have to get back to work. We have a couple of days before our next go on Friday.”
With the loss, Mid-Prairie is now 7-3 overall and 4-2 in conference while Regina climbs to 9-1 overall and stays unbeaten at 6-0 in the league.
The girls game featured a pair of ranked squads, but the same outcome for the Hawks as the No. 12 Regals beat No. 13 Mid-Prairie 54-36. Regina was on top 20-13 after one and 29-18 at half. Regina outscored the Hawks after break 25-18 to finish the win. The Hawks lost the turnover battle 26-22 and rebounds by 10. The Regals got a game high 22 points from Addie McLaughlin to lead. Mid-Prairie’s top number was 10 from Morgyn Bender. The loss is the first in conference for the Hawks as they fall to 5-1 in the RVC and 7-3 overall. Regina pulls even at 5-1 and 7-3 respectively.
