It’s the start of a busy week for the KCII Area Game of the Week tonight in Sigourney, as the home Savage boys and girls return to the hardwood in a meetup with the Highland Huskies on the KCII3 Stream.
The Sigourney girls are 7-3 overall, 5-3 in the South Iowa Cedar League and winners of back-to-back games. The latest was a 63-31 victory over Pekin Saturday. The Savages used a 21-3 run in the third period to pull away. This year, Sigourney scores 50 points per game, and gives up 40, shooting 28% from the field, 21% from three and 55% at the line. Sigourney is highlighted by their stout defense, poking out 15 steals a game. Individually, Brynn Clarahan leads the team with 22 points, seven rebounds and seven steals per game.
Highland is smack-dab in the middle of a hot streak, winners of 12 straight. They are an unbeaten 10-0 in the Southeast Iowa Superconference North. Their last game was a win Friday at rival Hillcrest 52-20. A trio of Huskies scored in double figures, with Katelyn Thomann leading the way at 13 points, Mackenzie Davis at 12 and Kamryn Fink at 10. This season, Highland scores 56 points per game and gives up 31, shooting a hot 40% from the field, 25% from deep and 54% at the line. They pull down 43 boards, 16 assists and 18 steals per game. The individual leader is Fink averaging a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds a night.
The Savages are 3-0 against Highland in the Varsity Bound era after a 53-35 win last year.
The Sigourney boys are 6-3 on the year, 6-2 in the SICL after a non-conference loss to Pekin Saturday. The contest was a back-and-forth affair, decided by a 16-12 Pekin advantage in the fourth. Through nine games, Sigourney scores 59 points per game and gives up 47, shooting 44% from the field, 30% from beyond the arc and 54% at the foul line. The Savages are unselfish offensively with 15 assists per game, and also flex muscle on the glass with 30 boards an outing. John Berg, one of the best in the SICL, averages a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds per game.
The Huskie boys recently picked up their second win on the campaign against Lone Tree but fell in their most recent contest at Hillcrest 72-34. Landon Roling led Highland with 12 points, followed by Bryce Hazelett at 10. This year, the Huskies score 47 points per game, and give up 68. They shoot 38% from the floor, 32% from three and 61% at the line, with 30 rebounds, 11 assists, seven steals, four blocks, and 18 turnovers per game. Highland is led by Landon Roling in a breakout junior year, scoring a double-double of 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds a night.
Much like the Sigourney girls, the Savage boys have not lost to Highland in three matchups in the Varsity Bound era.
