The Washington Demons will wrap up the first go-around of Southeast Conference play tonight, with the boys and girls hosting Burlington at the Demon Den.
The Washington girls are coming off of a 21-point loss to Marion, but a win tonight would cement the Demons as one of the teams to beat in the conference. Washington is 6-3 overall, and 3-1 in conference play. The Demons will look to get back to the strong defensive play that allowed them to take down several of their conference rivals already this season. Adalyn Long remains the team’s leading scorer, at 14.7 points per game, but sophomore Reagan Miller has emerged as a second option for the team over the past couple games.
Burlington is primarily led by a high-scoring senior duo. Mylee Stiefel averages 21 points per game, but Daphne Brown also adds an impressive 18.8 points a night. Brown also comes just .2 rebounds a game away from averaging a double-double for the year. The Bloodhounds are 5-3 this season, 3-1 in conference, with the lone conference loss coming against Keokuk.
Washington leads the series 13-7 in the Bound era, but Burlington has won the last three, including both games last year. Washington has broken several losing streaks this season, and will look to break another tonight.
The boys game also features two teams near the top of the standings. Washington comes off of a thrilling 75-72 win over Clear Creek Amana, improving their record to 7-2 this season. The Demons are 3-1 in the Southeast Conference. Washington will look to continue to utilize its well-balanced scoring approach, with any of their five starters able to be the go-to guy on any given night. Among them, Drew Conrad is the overall scoring leader, averaging 15.7 a game. Rajan Roth is not far behind him at 14.7, while Nic Stone and Tate Greiner have shown off their scoring capabilities at times this season.
Burlington is also 3-1 in conference play, but are 4-4 overall. The Bloodhounds have non-conference losses to Galesburg, Iowa City West, and state-ranked Muscatine. Sophomore Jett Morris has been the go-to guy for Burlington this year, with an average of 15.7 points per game. Senior Michael Kantzavelos averages 10.4 a night on nearly 47% shooting.
Washington leads the series 7-5 in the Bound era, dating back to 2019. The two teams split their season series last year, with the Bloodhounds winning the first time around 59-54, only for the Demons to take the rematch, 65-58.
