The interim Head of School at Hillcrest Academy is reporting a smooth first semester, with the school succeeding both academically and athletically.
Nate Miller, who also serves as the interim principal, says the school is receiving support from the community. In the new year, Miller says the school has the goal of replacing its outdoor athletics building, renovating the place that currently houses concessions, restrooms, locker rooms and storage for several of the school’s athletic programs. The school also hopes to put up a new maintenance building.
One of the primary challenges Hillcrest faces as a private school, Miller says, is securing funding, not only for all of the projects the school would like to undertake, but to keep growing and maintaining the level of education they currently offer attending students, “We’ve been really blessed to experience growth in the last couple of years, which is great, and there’s a lot of community support, but that growth comes with cost. Trying to put a little more time and effort into our finances is going to be an important thing for us over the next couple of years.”
Another challenge facing the school at the moment is its search for a new Head of School. A search committee has been appointed by the board, and hope to approve a candidate this winter. Hillcrest Academy provides education for grades 6th through 12th. Miller is currently serving an interim capacity, following last year’s departure of Dwight Gingerich, who is now the athletic director and men’s basketball coach at Goshen College.
