It’s SEISC-North basketball this Saturday afternoon, as the WACO Warriors host the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves for a doubleheader you can hear on KCII.
The girls varsity contest will kick things off, with two teams at the bottom of the conference looking to pick up a win after both taking a loss on Friday. WACO comes in at 1-6, but have come close to picking up the win in all but one of their losses this season. The Warriors lost to Columbus on Friday, 43-42. WACO is averaging just over 43 points a game, with junior Brenna Graber leading the way at 12.8 points per game. Alongside Graber, the Warriors are led by a strong junior class that lead the team in virtually every category.
On the other side, WMU has heavily struggled this season, getting blown out in several of their contests, with their lone win coming against winless Louisa-Muscatine. On Friday, WMU lost to conference foe Wapello, 53-18. The Wolves average just 34 points a game this season, but are a solid defensive side that allows just over 50 points a game. Senior Maddisen Kellogg crossed the 100-point mark in the Wolves’ last game, and is averaging 14.3 points a game this season on nearly 40% shooting.
Last season, WACO won both matchups, winning at WMU 46-45, and then defending their home floor with a 42-25 victory.
Following the girls, the boys take to the floor, with both teams sitting near the top of the standings. The WACO boys are 5-2 for the season, and 5-1 in conference play. The Warriors are also fresh off a big win over Columbus. Like the WACO girls, the boys are led by their strong junior class, with Hayden Shelman, Holden Hughes, and Sam Meyer all averaging around the 10-to-12 point range. Other solid contributors include seniors Niles Reichenbach and Nick West.
WMU is also 5-2, and also 5-1 in the conference. The Wolves are coming off of a slugfest, a 38-33 win over Wapello. WMU is outscoring their opponents by an average of 13 points this season. Juniors Isaac Egli and Cody Milks lead the Wolves in scoring, while senior Max Edwards is pulling down an impressive 9.2 rebounds per game this season. Edwards also averages 9.8 points a game, coming close to averaging a double-double per game.
WACO won both games between the two teams last year.
Saturday’s doubleheader begins with the girls varsity contest at 4:30 p.m. Pregame will begin at 4 on FM106.1, the KCII1 app, and kciiradio.com. The boys contest will follow the conclusion of the girls game.
