A new non-profit has been established to support the Wellman Scofield Public Library.

The Friends of the Wellman Public Library is a community organization with the goal of supporting and strengthening the services, programs, and resources offered by the library. The group will accomplish this through annual memberships, book sales, and other fundraising efforts. That funding will help support the library beyond its general operating budget.

Community members are encouraged to get involved through memberships, volunteering, or supporting upcoming events. The organization hopes to attract “book lovers, information seekers, readers, listeners, and lifelong learners of all ages” who recognize the library’s importance to the community.

Marcus Miller, a representative of the group, says the time was right to start the organization, “With the way the funding looks like from the county level, and things like that, the budget won’t be increasing from them. And so, if we want to do the programming that we’d like to see the library do, to continue its important work, it just seemed like it was good to see what funds we could generate from the local community.”

An individual annual membership is available for $10, a couples annual membership for $15, or a family annual membership for $25. Alternatively, a lifetime membership can be purchased for $150.
