The threat of carbon monoxide poisoning is highest in the winter months, particularly when temperatures are low, according to Alliant Energy.
Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when heating equipment malfunctions and only a carbon monoxide detector can alert inhabitants of the odorless gas. Carbon monoxide is a deadly odorless, colorless and tasteless gas, which makes it hard for people to detect. Warning signs of CO poisoning include dizziness, shortness of breath, headaches, confusion, nausea and fainting.
Alliant recommends placing a detector on each floor of a home or business. If a detector issues an alarm, exit the building and call 911.
