The Columbus Wildcat boys and girls basketball teams travel to New London Thursday for a Southeast Iowa Superconference hoop doubleheader you can hear live on KCII. The Wildcat boys are 3-1 this year and 2-1 in the Superconference with wins over Highland and Lone Tree. The Tiger boys are winless in three tries this year including a 58-54 loss to the Lions last time out. This week, Wildcat head coach Jake Korbakes talked with KCII Sports about what he wants to see from his team Thursday. “New London is a team that could easily be 2-1 or 3-0. We have won the games we are supposed to this year. It’s really important that we go about it the same way and anticipate them and be ready for their guys because they have some solid athletes, a good coach, and they are going to be hungry to get a win on their home floor. We have to be able to bring the energy and start the game fast like we usually do.”
Columbus has won four of the last seven in the series including a 59-49 win last year.
In the girls matchup, Columbus is 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the league after a 53-35 loss to Highland. The Wildcats score 46 points per game, shooting 26% from the floor, 22% from three and 49% at the line with 37 rebounds, 16 steals, 11 assists and 24 turnovers. Individually, Kennedy Woepking and Isabel Rendon each go for nine points per game. Woepking leads with seven boards, Ellie Sanders with three assists and Rendon and Sanders each have three steals per night.
New London is winless in three games this year including a 63-9 loss to Van Buren. The Tigers score 14 points per game, shooting 18% from the field, 14% from three and 50% at the line to go with 16 rebounds, five steals, two assists, and 21 turnovers. Paige Schull-Collins leads with nine points and two steals per game. Evelyn Adams had four rebounds. Columbus has won five of seven in the series and four in a row including 63-30 last year. This week, Wildcat girls head coach Kasey Keltner talked with KCII Sports about his keys. “I want to see the ball movement that I saw in the third quarter (against Highland). We’re still struggling to make some of the shots, but at least we got great opportunities. I also think we cut our turnovers down in the fourth quarter. Our defensive pressure was also a little bit better and I would like to see those things happen also Thursday against New London. Good ball movement, boxing out, getting one-and-dones, using ball fakes, not turning the ball over. I’d like to see the energy for the full 32 minutes, because that’s been the issue for us so far this year.”
You can hear all of the action live tonight on all KCII signals, streams and apps, beginning with the Area Game of the Week Pregame Show at 5:30p.m., tip of the girls game at six with the boys to follow.
