Diners will enjoy a night of medieval revelry at the 32nd annual Madrigal Dinner later this month in Wellman.
The event, hosted by the Mid-Prairie High School choir, sees attendees transported a few hundred years back into the past. There will be royalty with kings and queens, a jester, and beggars seeking money and coins, among other roles. The meal consists of five courses, including cheese and crackers, soup and salad, the main course, dinner, and dessert. During the meal, the students will sing with different groups performing one after another.
Three performances are planned for this year, on December 12th, 13th, and 14th. The show will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 5 p.m. on Sunday. Mid-Prairie High School Vocal Director Collette McClellan says tickets are pretty much sold out for this year. She says there’s always high demand for tickets. “I do actually have quite a few parents over the years, they don’t even have students here, and I have at least three or four that email me every year, saying, ‘Just double checking, when are the tickets going to be on sale? I want to make sure that we can get them.’ And so I very much appreciate the people that still come back here year after year, even though they might have no students of their own in it. They’re just very supportive of the whole program.”
The first Madrigal Dinner event was held in 1993. It was started by the then vocal director, Dr. Louise Frakes. Including this year, McClellan says she has helped with 31 of the 32 shows.
