School bus drivers in the Mid-Prairie Community School District are responsible for getting kids to and from school even when road conditions aren’t perfect. As winter weather approaches, people are reminded of the extra care taken on the roads.
Transportation Director Teresa Hartley with the Mid-Prairie School District outlined that bus drivers will therefore be taking extra precautions before and during their routes this winter season. That includes slowing down and increasing following distance, as well as braking early and gently. Drivers will also avoid making sudden movements, such as sharp turns and accelerating quickly. An increased focus will also be placed on pre-trip inspections, ensuring that tires, heaters, defrosters, wipers, and emergency lights are all in working condition.
If sharing the road with a bus, giving plenty of space is of utmost importance. Icy conditions require a longer breaking distance, and are not a valid excuse for sliding past or ignoring the stop arm.
Expect overall route times to take longer than normal. This winter, stay on top of anticipated weather forecasts to plan out departure times in advance. Listen to KCII for weather updates.
