The No. 6 in Class 2A Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team was all business Friday night in a 59-0 shut out of West Burlington Notre Dame on Senior Night at Bill Nelson Field. The Hawks, brought their focus and next-man-in mentality, without the services of record-setting quarterback Brooks Weber. Hudson Ehrenfelt’s transition to signal caller went smoothly in his first start Friday, directing Mid-Prairie down the field on their first possession, an 11-play 52 yard drive that ended with a seven yard toss to Gentry Bontrager for six and gave the Hawks the early lead. Next drive, Kaden Kos added to his highlight reel, pummeling three Falcon defenders and a 45 yard trip to the end zone to double the lead. The Hawks went quick strike before the half, Ehrenfelt used his legs to score from two yards out, and add a two-pointer. An unsportsmanlike penalty after a late hit on the Golden Hawk QB allowed Mid-Prairie to roll the dice. A successful onside saw the Hawks add another touchdown not 30 seconds later when Ehrenfelt dialed up Nolan Jergens from 11 yards for his second scoring throw of the night, sending the game to break at 28-0 Golden Hawks.
Mid-Prairie got the ball out of half and added special teams points when Kael Miller drove a 39 yard field goal right down central to make it 31-0. After a Falcon drive stalled, it was time for another Kos highlight. He went untouched 65 yards on a punt return with speed to burn and enacted the running clock at 38-0. The faces on the field changed for Mid-Prairie from then on as the Golden Hawks rotated in some reserves, but the results didn’t. Ryan Henry had a 22-yard rushing score, the longest of his career, backup quarterback Bronx Miller got in the books with the first touchdown of his career, a 30 yard throw to Carson Humphrey and Oliver Miller made the score sheet with a nine yard touchdown, his first varsity score. After the win, Golden Hawks of the Game Hudson Ehrenfelt and Kaden Kos talked about the team and unbeaten run through district. “Backups, second string is already ready to play. We’re always focusing. We always have someone ready to go. It’s another day at work. Do you job, get your task done and move on. This feels great to be able to go undefeated again in district but, that’s not our main focus. The main focus is playoffs now, and doing something special here.”
Unofficially, Mid-Prairie won total yards 360-155 including 265-126 rushing. The Falcons won turnovers 1-0. Kos finished with 162 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. Ehrenfelt had 146 all-purpose yards including a seven of eight night throwing for 63 yards and two touchdowns and 83 rushing yards on 14 carries with two more scores. Henry added 85 yards and a touchdown on 10 rushes. Falcon running back Jayden Nanthan who entered the night leading the state at more than 200 yards rushing per game was held to 104 on 19 carries, most of which were after the game was decided. Caedyn Huston, Cecil Kelley and Kaden and Kendrick Kos topped the tackle chart. The win gives the Hawks back-to-back undefeated district championship season at 5-0, and moves them to 7-1 overall. West Burlington ends the year 3-4. The Golden Hawks open up the playoffs next Friday in Wellman.
