Washington residents should expect to see more work done on Highway 92 in the next few weeks.
Earlier this year, residents noticed the installation of the stoplights at the intersection of East Washington Street and South 12th Avenue by the United Presbyterian Home. The next steps of the project are soon to be underway.
City Administrator Joe Gaa shared the next steps of the project, “It’s actually two projects but it’s at the same location, sort of. That’s the fun part about it, but we start off at 12th Avenue in Washington at the Highway 92 intersection. That three-way intersection at the UP Home. If you are coming off of 12th Avenue and trying to make a left turn onto Washington, in the morning or in the evenings especially, those are the two worst times. It can be pretty backed up there. So we developed a project to put in a traffic signal. The signals are installed, everybody has noticed those. The second project, a separate project, is to do some pavement widening at that intersection to make that a little bit easier turning even with the traffic signals. And then Highway 92 coming into town clear up to where it meets Madison, where its four lanes will go to a three-lane [road], much like the west side was done a few years ago.”
After the lane widening is completed, the three lane stripping will take place. The work is expected to be completed over the next month.
