In a battle of KCII Southeast Iowa Superconference volleyball teams Thursday, the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves celebrated a road win on Hillcrest Academy’s Senior Night. The visitors from WMU took the match by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-23. Leaders for the Lady Wolves included Madisen Kellogg with 26 assists and three aces. Aubrey Valencia with 18 digs and four aces. Quin Smith with 15 kills and four blocks. Katie Miller with 11 digs. Kaelyn Townsley with nine kills. Kellogg and Smith spoke with KCII Sports about the keys to the Wolves win. “You just have to have faith in your team and teammates, even when it’s not going your way and not in your control. You always have to keep a positive attitude and let them know that they’ve got the next one and then adjust. We feed off each other’s energy. Tonight, we needed to focus on our serves. We need to go back there with confidence. From the third set on, we really came out and showed that. We needed to stop the little mistakes. It’s the little things that get us. (On the last point) we said ‘we’re killing it!’ ‘Let’s go get it!’ ‘We have to get it!’. The team had really good passes tonight. We got the hitters and the middles involved tonight, that was a goal. We were hustling and on it.”
Raven leaders included Claire Withrow with 27 assists and 13 digs. Brynna Boshart with 16 digs and six aces. Niva Helmuth with 11 kills and three aces. 10 kills for Ruth Witthoft. Claire Miller added three aces. The win leaves the Wolves at 15-10 on the year and 5-2 in the Superconference while the Ravens drop to 16-9 and 4-3. Hillcrest honored six seniors before the match including Claire Withrow, Nora Swartzendruber, Tara Poole, Niva Helmuth, Stavia Miller and Adrianne Blauvelt.
